Pros: Fresh Crisp Graphical Upgrade, No Load Times, Vast Story Mode, Throwback Classic Mode!
Cons: Doesn't fully harness the power of the Xbox 360.
The bottom line: This game is fun and a great addition to anyone's Xbox 360 library. I recommend at least a rental if not a purchase.
Full review
First let me start off by saying that any true fan of the Tony Hawk series will love this game. The gameplay is still the same as it has been since the original Pro Skater, and the additions to this title advance the series that much more.
GAMEPLAY
There are two modes to this game. The Classic Mode, which we have all come to know and love, and a story mode which has been added in the series since the Underground games. Classic Mode is a treat for fans of the series because the levels that you play through are various levels from the classic games such as the Mall from Tony Hawk Pro Skater to Minneapolis from Tony Hawk 2. The goals are mainly the same in classic mode: collect skate, combo, high scores, etc, etc. The goals are fun and challenging for veterans as well as newcomers to the franchise. Story mode is the biggest part of the game. You choose one of 4 characters who are about to hop on a bus to LA to pursue their dreams of becoming a professional skateboarder. Once there they face insults until you work yourself up to better skills and higher street cred. The story mode features challenges from the skate shops as well as other competitions and various tasks brought on by the characters you meet throughout the game. Some of these tasks can get old or slightly repetitive but its not too bad.One of the biggest changes for this title is that there are no load times between "levels." The different areas of the game are connected by skateable tunnels so you can keep you tricks going all day.
Graphics
The Xbox 360 version of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland features a noticeable graphical upgrade from the previous games as well as the regular Xbox version. However, the graphics are not what they could be, the power of the Xbox 360 is not full harnessed in this title which is a slight disappointment but not a major downfall.
Overall
Overall this game is fun, and is presented very cleanly on the Xbox 360. The classic mode will lure in and diehard fan of the Tony Hawk franchise and the story mode will introduce new gamers to the fun of the series.
