I figured since I posted an opinion on Chrono Cross and spoke so venerably about Chrono Trigger, I would take my own advice and review my thoughts on Chrono Trigger, so I whipped out the old SNES and I played it all the way through, just like did with Chrono Cross. The
results were not surprising.
Chrono Trigger for its time had decent graphics, so it was hard for me to judge that right away, I pretty much dismissed that, but not completely, I still have to keep that in mind.
Even though the story-line was already known to me and I already knew what was going to happen, it still kept me entertained, as it had several years ago. Each plot twist sharp and crisp.
The battle scenes were void of cool cinemas, but the effects were still good and the combination attacks kept me excited.
Some of the bosses continued to annoy me as they did before, but at least they weren't too easy like many in Chrono Cross were. And I thought that Chrono Trigger still had a way a challenging you, some bosses you needed to have a certain strategy to defeat, which I had completely forgotten about.
Possibly the biggest bonus to Chrono Trigger was the fact that all the characters are very rich with personality and the have some accents like in Chrono Cross, but these don't become annoying. Another one of my favorites is the signature melodies that each character has, I thought that made the game a lot better.
The story-line is perhaps the best I have ever seen in an RPG, it all centers around Lavos, there are plot twists, but it doesn't send you a hundred different directions and leave you completely lost, everything moves on to finding out more about the next step until you reach it, all the while immersing you in an amazing world.
The story begins as a teen-age, Crono, the main character, going to the Millennial Fair in Leene Sqaure. Crono lives on a continent called Guardia. At the fair, he meets a girl named Marle and they try out Crono's friend, Lucca's tele-portation device.
The pendant Marle is wearing activates by the tele-portaion device and she is sent to the past. Crono and Lucca use the pendant to breach the time portal once again and follow her. They find out the past has
been changed because of Marle's appearance there because she is really the princess of the present and at that time, the Queen of Guardia has been kidnapped so when they find her, she is almost identical to the Queen at the time that they give up thier search for her.
Crono and Lucca go searching for the real Queen and are joined by a frog who was once human. Together they rescue Queen Leene and return her to the castle. Crono, Marle, and Lucca return to their time only to find that Crono is on trial for kidnapping Marle(the princess).
Crono is falsely convicted and is sentenced to execution. Crono breaks from the jail to join Lucca and Marle. They escape this time to the future where they discover that a alien creature named Lavos is has decimated the planet. They vow then to use the time portals to find more about Lavos and stop him.
And the story continues on to define what an RPG is, metaphorically speaking. This game is definitely the best RPG I have EVER played.
I don't think there is much else to say, so if you ever get a chance to play Chrono Trigger again, like I have, take the chance, you'll remember..
