Pros: Great multiplayer action...why don't you just read the opinion?
Cons: Frame rate occasionally stutters

So, youre throwing a party, are you? And you have nothing to do, yet you say you have a N64 tucked away in your closet? Whats wrong with you?! Dont you know how much fun can come out of that little black box, if used properly, of course. Take, for instance, this game here,
GoldenEye. This game is almost multi-player heaven. Think about it
dozens of weapons, fully customizable levels, lotsa levels to blast your friends away on
you even get to choose your favorite Bond character! Okay, Im getting a little too excited, but you get the idea. So, what makes this game just so darn great, addicting, and quite possibly the best multiplayer game that Ive played? Well, thats what Im here to tell you today, so buckle up, strap in, whatever, cause here we go! And yes, that was corny, I know.
For those that have never heard of me before, I rate all my games off of
Graphics,
Control,
Story,
Sound, and
Replayability/Length. Those truly make a game.
Graphics
Okay, we all know that the N64 does get some horrible graphics every now and then
but if only they could be this good all the time. Granted, the graphics arent the best on the system that Ive seen (
Zelda: Ocarina of Time takes that honor), but for an early N64 game, they certainly are purty. The detail in some of the levels is great, like the Cuban Jungle level. And I really love how the soldiers react realistically when shot
bust them in the knee, and they hop around, cap em in the head, they drop like a pile of bricks. If only some of the N64 games could be this good
Control
I personally hate the N64 controller
especially the joystick, which can stick at time, be a little too sensitive, is a little too small, is sometimes too loose, yadda, yadda yadda. Amazingly, though, I really had no problem using the controller for this game. Its almost perfect. And even if it isnt, you can customize it to your standards. Bond, or more specifically, you, move with a distinct smoothness. The frame rate stays steady unless theres a lot of explosions and guards firing at you, but thats not to often (unless you cause it
hehe).
Story
Have you seen the movie? If so, then you know the story of the game. The game follows the movie rather closely. Not perfectly, but the general idea is the same. Its got backstabbin, guns, girls, guns, not too many cars, more guns
if it werent for the lack of cars, youd have like the perfect
James Bond plot.
Sound
Oh, man. Now this is some serious sh*t! The music in the game perfectly matches the feel of the movie, every note accounted for. The music will drag you in by your ears, and it wont let you out until you press power. And its not just the music, the sound effects are also great. With dozens of gunshot blasts, both silenced and not, explosions, missiles being launched, and people gettin shot. I swear, if only every other N64 game had sound this good.
Replayability/Length
Rare has done something rare
made a first-person shooter last more than two months. Think about it, whens the last time you played a FPS religiously for more than two or so months? I cant think of one, even
Medal of Honor for the
PSX only lasted me maybe a month, if that. This game has around 20 or so levels, plus two hidden ones. Each level has three difficulty settings, and on the highest it takes
forever to beat them. Even after you beat all the levels and get all them secrets (and there are a lot
A LOT), you still have multiplayer mode
which is almost damn near perfect. More on that later.
Like I said, if ya saw the movie, then you know the plot of the game. Bond must stop Trevelian from blasting London with this satellite, thus taking out all the power. Thats really about it
although there is some more stuff thrown in for the game. You have to rescue hostages from a boat, sneak into the Siberian lab, get out of a Siberian jail, and destroy a missile silo. You even get to run rampant through St. Petersburg blasting at anything that moves (well, not quite anything, but you get the picture). Isnt being a secret agent fun?
Now, multiplayer mode. The real reason why you need this game. If ya got 3 other friends, and this game, then you can basically spend the night away doing nothing but killin each other over and over again, just to see whos the master. You can choose what kind of modes you want, such as
Capture the Flag or
Man With the Golden Gun, or even just straightforward
Last Man Standing, teams or no teams. You can even choose the time limit, what kind of weapons you want, and what levels (out of 10 or so) you want. After you set all the options to your liking (just ignore your friends, you need settings that can work to
your advantage, thus letting you win every time), you just go and fight. Its hella fun, and one of the best multiplayer experiences ever.
Well, I think I covered everything. Anyways, if youve got a N64, a lot of friends, and some time to waste, the go out and get this. I swear, youll thank me later. Just be nice to them, you do want to keep your friends, after all. If you enjoy this game, then youll also enjoy
Medal of Honor for the
Playstation, or if FPS arent your thing, then some other great multiplayer games are
Mario Kart 64 and
Super Smash Brothers, both for N64.
