Having played the original metal gear, and metal gear solid, I was very curious about the gameboy version. I have played gameboy games since the bulky original gameboy with its' monochrome colored screen. By far this game is the best game ever to grace the portable screen.
First, the graphics is by far the the most impressive I've seen for gameboy. The colors may not be the brightest, but it fits perfectly. The sades of blue and green gives the game the same feel as the playstation versions. The game even comes with cut scenes to further the story along. The character movements flow nicely and is the smoothest I've seen for gameboy.
For sound, I did not expect too much, given that the gameboy does not boast impressive sounds in the first place. The background music is very good at setting the tempo and mood for the game. The explosions and gun fire are pretty much standard. The only annoying thing about the sound is when characters speak, it comes out as beeps and squeaks. You can get around that by speeding through the cutscenes.
The gameplay and story is what sets metal gear above all else. First, unlike other games, you do not blast everything in sight. In fact, the whole premise of metal gear is to use stealth. It is best to avoid a battle, and only pick your fights when necessary. The weapons available are very varied. However, like I said, it is best to avoid using your weapon. The puzzles and traps keeps the game from being repetative. It will probably take a few tries before you can clear the stage without setting off the alarm every few minutes. The story about a nuclear bipedal machine known as metal gear keeps you playing. The cutscenes further the story and helps develope some of the characters in the game.
Overall, this game sets new standards in terms of gameplay and graphics.
If you had to get one game for gameboy this year, this is the one to get.
