Snake is back in a must-have GBC title that will set the standards for portable gaming.
If you are a big fan of the Playstation version, you are in for a real treat. This game keeps so much of the Playstation version's look and feel, you'll be right at home, without sitting in front of the TV. Konami definitely knows what they are doing.
With this game, Konami has proven that they know how to make a great conversion of a PSX game, to the Game Boy Color. The graphics are stunning, the plot has lots of depth, the music and sound effects are great, and the controls are tight and responsive. Why is this such a great game? Let me think a moment
An original, portable adventure
7 years after the first MGS
..
This game has a great, original story, with lots of depth, different from the PSX version. From beginning to end, this game is an entirely different MGS when it comes to the plot. The GLF terrorist organization, has stolen the classified, nuclear armed Metal Gear; a mobile walking war machine, that has made quick nuclear strike a reality. With this new weapon under their hands, they are unstoppable. As ex-commando Solid Snake (David Hayter) you must infiltrate the enemy fortress Galuade, using your brains, not just brawn. You must master stealthy movements to avoid detection
There is a wide selection of weapons, ranging from the Five-Seven pistol, to the Nikita remote controlled missile launcher, you have all the weaponry you need, but be warned: sometimes stealth is necessary, not blazing guns. Remember, you are trying to remain undetected
.
There are other items you must use to complete your adventure, like the foggers which let you detect laser trip wires. Other items such as the mine detector are needed, to avoid mines strewn about some areas of the game.
Your adventure spans over 50+ stages, so it will take you awhile before you finish this action-packed hit. Another cool feature, is after you have finished the game, you can go back to stages you have already completed and play them again regularly, or with a timer. This game has lots of reply value
Now, Metal Gear Solid just wouldn't be Metal Gear Solid without the popular VR missions, which gave the PSX game a boost for originality. The GBC version contains over 180 different VR missions, concentrating on different skills needed to complete the game. There are Stealth VR missions, weaponry VR missions, and advanced VR missions which require both. The game even includes the old VR missions from the original MGS.
Another big boost in the replay value department, is the great link cable battle mode. Each player plays as Snake. Player 1 is blue, and player 2 is red. You then get to choose 2 weapons, on top of mines and the Five Seven pistol, which are already selected. Your mission, is to then find the 3 cases, and shatter them--sometimes they contain ammo, data disks, or other items. There are 3 ways to win:
-Reach the goal while in possesion of 3 data disks
-Killing the other player 3 times
-Having the greater number of data disks when the timer runs out
Whoever completes one of these objectives is declared the winner.
Metal Gear Solid for Game Boy Color is a giant leap in portable gaming, and is a must-own game for any Metal Gear fan, or anyone just looking for an action game with lots of replay value. If this is a sign of what Konami has in store in the future, then gamers are in for many more great gaming experiences.
