When I first purchased Metal Gear Solid for Gameboy Color, I was very skeptical. We already owned Metal Gear Solid for playstation, so when I saw that it was out on Gameboy I wondered what Konami was thinking. How could they even come close to capturing the graphics, sound, action, adventure, and thrill of the playstation Metal Gear onto Gameboy Color? Well they did one hell of a job!

First of all, how could a game as intricate as Metal Gear be shrunk down into a hand held game, and even grasp a piece of the quality of the original? Well, this game has the best graphics that I have seen on Gameboy yet! For most of the gameplay, it has a slightly tilted birds eye view of the scenario, to provide excellent viewing range, and still hold onto the shape of things. You move can go in any direction: Forward, backward, right, left, and up, down. Obviously the graphics aren’t as great as they are on playstation, but they are magnificent for Gameboy Color.

In the scenes where you are using codec (a type of visual-audio transmitting device), you can see the people's faces and expressions clearly and the words are written below. You have the option of the words being scrolled automatically or you can scroll through them manually (which is good if you have already read what they are saying) Some scenes have really good graphics, like when snake confronted Sgnt Chris Jenner (wow is she a hottie, but so is mei ling). Anyways, the graphics are superb.

There are so many different levels and so much to figure out. You have to keep trying for a while just to plow through one level. Just like in the original game you can use your radar to watch out for guards, and if you get caught the guards are alerted for about 10 seconds, then patrol around in less of an alert mode for another 10. My heart sometimes actually starts pounding when I am in the dark and there is creepy music playing.

That brings up another topic- the music and sound. The music and sound effects closely resemble the original game. The quality of the sound far surpasses any other game that I know of. It doesn’t repeat itself often, and has an upbeat style that keeps you on your toes. Whenever I play, I am ready for action.

There are other similarities from the Playstation version. For those of you who have the original, remember the VR mode? The Virtual Reality training mode was a way to teach yourself different skills required to play the game. The Gameboy version has the same VR mode, except it is even improved! Choose from sneaking mode, to different types of weapons. Perfect your ability to hide from the guards and walk quietly. Or you can practice using C4 explosives, Remote controlled missile launchers, grenades, a variety of pistols and rifles, and much more. There is so much to chose from, beat the different VR levels to get bonus levels! See if you have what it takes to beat the levels quickly and efficiently.

Another similarity from the original game is that you are being judged on the quality of your play, as you go along. The amount of enemy killed (less is better) and other factors like time, gives you a certain rating. However Gameboy decides to keep you updated after each level. I have trouble getting a better rating then horrible.

You would think that you would run into a problem with there not being enough buttons, however Konami handles this smoothly by bringing up different screens when you press select. Once you get the hang of it you can switch items and weapons quickly and efficiently.

There is even a 2 player mode which I am dying to try out, but don't know anyone who has Metal Gear yet. I bet it would be spectacular.

And I was afraid of getting bored of the same story plot! Well be assured if you already have played Metal Gear for playstation, you won't get bored of this at all! Konami has changed the story plot just enough that first time players won't be losing out on the ingenious of the original game, but people who already know the plot will be still fascinated because of how much it has changed.

I really recommend Metal Gear Solid to anyone who loves adventure and action videogames. This is really a fabulous game. The best I have seen for a portable console. You won't be disappointed!
