One of the first Dreamcast games announced, SRC has plenty of promise, and accordingly plenty to offer. This title had Saturn fanatics drooling for Sega’s new 128-bit system.

To start with, you expect the first racer for the Dreamcast to have splendid 3D graphics. And your expectations are totally fulfilled. The rich textures really make you think you’re in the car, as the detailed car-models put you in the action. The lush backgrounds and tremendous weather effects only add to the awesome realism.

The audio is nearly equal to the richness of the visual department of SRC. The screeching tires, the gunning engines, and so on deepen the intense realism that Sega wants you to experience with this game.

The control is where the water surrounding SRC gets murky. Yes, you can customize the control for your car which is very nice, so that you can have things “just so”. However, even with tons of tweaking I was unable to find a happy medium. I just couldn’t find a good adjustment for the steering, and so I was constantly irritated with the way my car handled. Sure, you can go at very high speeds in SRC, but if you dare try, the steering will prevent you from turning any sharp corners, and you’ll slam into the wall. Of course, you could attempt to master the sliding techniques, which by the way, are pretty difficult. So to avoid smashing into the walls, you will more often than not find yourself slowing down to make a turn, and thereby losing your position in the race. This is terribly annoying, and takes a lot of enjoyment out of SRC.

Overall, Sega Rally Championship on the Sega Dreamcast has incredible graphics, great sound and control that just doesn’t cut it. A game with much promise and little delivery.
