Wario's back in a strange mix of quirky mini games for DS.

Pros: Ashley's song, LOTS of mini games, extra "toys", comic videos.
Cons: Repetitive, visuals get the job done, sounds are so-so.

The bottom line: Warioware is not for everybody. I recommend this to ppl that have a short attention span and want to have something new.

Intro

Warioware is a strange compilation of mini games that all add up to one fun game. The precursor was released for the Nintendo GameCube and took elements from Mario Party and flipped them upside down. Now we are given a new Warioware game for the Nintendo DS that takes the fun atmosphere of the NGC original, and bends it to fit in our two screens.

The game is sold in most stores for ~$34.99 which is pretty reasonable, I believe. The first time I put the game in my system, I had a pretty good idea of what it was going to be like from all of those parties playing it on NGC at my friends' house.

It starts off with a strange (funny) comic scene that involves Wario finding a DS. Within minutes you're thrown into a bunch of mini games, which is what this entire game is all about. From rolling toilet paper off frivorously to tapping the butt-end of a mechanical pencil, this game will test your physical dexterity with a stylus!

It's not necessarily just a stroll in a park, however. The game keeps on making the animation speed up - faster and faster. To make matters worse, there is a bomb on the bottom of the screen that has a VERY short fuse. If this bomb hits the end, you lose a life. You only get 4 lives to complete a round. A round could start off with popping balloons or sorting out characters by the clothes they are wearing. As time elapses during the round, by the end you may only have 3 seconds to wake someone up or tap the heck out of a running steed to win a race (the tapping with the stylus is to create a makeshift whip).

Thankfully the DS is pretty well responsive and picks up on every time the stylus connects with the bottom screen. This game is definitely not the easiest game because of the intensity caused by the constant speeding up.

The game's graphics are pretty simplistic. They do what they have to do. Because the objectives are self-explanatory, the only help that you will get is a simple word that will pop-up on the screen. If, let's say the screen shows a roll of toilet paper, then it's obvious that you have to unroll the toilet paper. The only graphics on the screen is the toilet paper unrolling with a cheesy background. Like I mentioned before, it does what it needs to do. I wouldn't purchase this game expecting to see perfect three-dimentional graphics with the world's most stellar particle effects.

In addition to the lack of detail displayed, the screen might say "pop" for popping balloons or "get home" in which case you'll need to draw a line and make a stick man get to the house without running into a bomb or spikes. You may even need to blow into the DS micrphone, causing bubbles to come on the screen. This game pretty much utilizes every feature the DS has to offer.

Warioware has some half-way decent tunes. I found "Ashley's theme" to be a very fun, macabre song. It's got this girl's voice that is completely monochrome singing lyrics (Better know that I'm the greatest A-S-H-L-E-Y) to a half-baked ghostly song, reminiscent of the Addams Family.

There are different characters in this game other than Wario. Each character is displayed on the main screen and when tapped, have their own set of mini-games which are weighted on the type of gameplay. For instance, Wario's games are mostly ones that require the player to tap the stylus. Dr. Krygar's games require a spinning motion with the stylus and so forth.

These characters don't have many words to say, just little grunts and happy "YEAs" and stuff. Barrels being shot, horses "neighing", and the flow of water coming from a showerhead seem alright. The length of the songs for this game is not very long, but they really don't have to be. I wouldn't be surprised if the average length of a song is 7 seconds. This is because the bomb that is on the bottom of the screen isn't going to last 3 or 4 minutes.

(Spoilers) As you play the game, you will unlock little toys and stuff that go into a side category. These include some of the most random items to ever be associated with a video game like a ping-pong table, bouncy cake, a yo-yo to name a few. Some of the ones I really liked are the piano, parrot (repeats what you say into the DS microphone), bubble-blower, and the breath-pressure gauge. There are quite a few of these games and they are just amusing, especially if you were stuck in an airport and wanted to kill some time.

This may not be for everyone, but I would recommend this game to anyone that wants something that's completely different than a typical video game. This definitely is NOT a regular video game, and I think that the younger audience (say 5-8) would really get a kick out of this. My neice is going to turn 5 and we are going to get this for her birthday because every time she comes over she plays it non-stop! If the main game drives you nuts, there's enough unlockable toys that anyone will find at the very least somewhat amusing. If still unsure about the quirkiness, rent before you buy.
